In South Africa, the youth demographic (aged 15 to 34) faces higher unemployment rates than the national average, presenting challenges to their economic participation.
As part of the first phase of the project, building 72 units, four local SMMEs have been selected to build five units, each winning a contract worth R3 million. Of the four SMME contractors, three are women-owned. All SMME contractors are supported by the clerk of works and the main contractor responsible for the remaining units, to ensure that high-quality houses are produced on time and budget.
